Han pasado más de 15 años desde que Joe Lewis Thomas, más conocido como Joe, sacara su primer disco “Everything” en medio de la revolución New Jack Swing con aquellos grandes “The One For Me” o “I’m In Luv“; aun así este primer larga duración no tuvo la repercusión que se esperaba y no es hasta el tema “All The Things” incluído en la banda sonara de la película de los hermanos Wayans “Don’t Be A Menace” (llamada en español “Los Colegas Del Barrio”) en el que este hijo de predicadores no empezaría a rodar por las radios de todos los EE.UU. Este tema sería el primer single de su siguiente lp “All That I Am” (1997), sin duda un clásico de mitad de los 90, donde Joe se mueve como pez en el agua en esos slow jams que le caracterizan y que incluye el super éxito “Dont Wanna Be A Player”. Aprovechando este éxito realiza varias colaboraciones de diversa índole (Mariah Carey, Big Punisher) e incluso llega a escribir/producir temas en el álbum debut de Ideal.
Joe – Don’t wanna be a player
Tres años después y entrado el nuevo siglo, Joe lanza su tercer disco “My Name Is Joe” del cual salen baladas genuinas como “I Wanna Know” o el que se convertiría en uno de sus más sonados hits “Stutter” si bien no sería tal hasta la remezcla acompañada del rapero Mystikal y el beat con el sample de Quincy Jones “Summer In The City”. Establecido ya como un R&B Crooner (un cantante rnb conocido por sus baladas) sus dos proximos lps “The Better Days” (2001) y “And Then…” (2002) pasan casi desapercibidos. Aún así, singles como “Let’s Stay Home Tonight” “Ride With You” junto a G Unit o “More & More” junto a R Kelly fueron sus bazas para sobrevivir comercialmente en esa época de cambios en el mundo de la música negra que supuso dejar los 90 atrás.
Problemas con su discográfica hacen que Joe no deje rastro hasta 2007 que vuelve con “Aint Nothin Like Me” rodeado de productores de la talla de Tim&Bob, Cool&Dre, Brian Michael Cox o Stargate, los cuales pondrían música al primer single “If I Was Your Man“.
Dejando atrás problemas legales y con discográfica nueva, Joe vuelve al ritmo de lp por año y el año pasado editó el que sería su séptimo álbum de estudio llamado “Joe Thomas, New Man” de la mano casi íntegramente del superproductor Brian Michael Cox, responsable de las mejores baladas del mercado hoy por hoy. En este lp que tendría como single de presentación el tema “ER” y como segundo single “Why Just Can Be Friends” cabe destacar el slow jam “Start Over Again”.
Hace unos meses saldría a la venta su octavo álbum “Signature” en el que Joe firma varios temas producidos y escritos por él mismo. En este nos podremos encontrar el álbum quiza más personal y por tanto, más representativo de Joe. El single elegido ha sido “Majic” en el que nos muestra como ha sabido hacer de su estilo algo atemporal, con la esencia de sus temas 90’s pero sin dejar de sonar actual. Quizá este sea el secreto de su éxito, estando aún vivo en el mercado americano, cosa que no pueden decir otros artistas de su generación.
