Productor, multi-instrumentista, rapero, arreglista y cantante, Ryan Leslie es uno de los músicos más interesantes de los últimos años en los EEUU. El fundador de NextSelection Lifestyle Group, quien se diera a conocer internacionalmente por sus producciones a su protegida Cassie (“Me & U”), Beyoncé (“Keep Giving Your Love To Me”), Donell Jones (“Better Start Talking” junto a JD), Loon (“Down 4 Me”) o New Edition (“Hot 2Nite”) entre muchas otras, nos presenta este 2009 su esperado álbum debut como cantante. Y decir esperado es poco porque los primeros indicios del álbum se remontan al año 2003, con aquellos “The Way That U Move, Girl!” y “Used 2 Be” (junto a Fabolous) que sonaron en múltiples mixtapes y recopilatorios pero que no consiguieron dar el espaldarazo definitivo a ese primer proyecto, “Just Right” que finalmente no vió la luz. Tras un par de mixtapes oficiales, Ryan vuelve al estudio en 2006. Al primer single “Diamond Girl” (2007) le siguieron el video de “I-R-I-N-A” para su propio canal de YouTube y los singles “Addiction” (feat. Cassie & Fabolous, 2008) y “How It Was Supposed To Be” (2009). Los tres sencillos son buena muestra de lo que podemos encontrar en el LP: a un rapero solvente que huye de featurings innecesarios, a un solista correcto con agradable voz aunque limitado registro, a un gran productor con gusto por el New Jack, los electro loops y el falsetto, a un renovador de las pistas que se aleja de los temas club y pseudo-HipHop de los últimos años. Con todo, esperábamos algo más de esta primera entrega de R-Les, 12 cortes que aunque en general funcionan por separado, componen un disco algo monótono en escuchas prolongadas. Destacan eso sí joyas como el mid-tempo “Just Right”, el paródico auto-tuned “Gibberish”, y alguno de los mencionados singles.
